Gonbade(dome) Qabus- Gonbade Kawus The dome of Shams Oi Maali Qabus Ibn Woshmgir Ale Ziyar is one of the unique masterpieces of Islamic architecture which is erected on a small hill in the Gonbade Kawos city. This building, despite its few decorative elements, is considered as one of the glorious and beautiful buildings of the early Islamic period. The dome consists of three parts: the base, the walls, and the coned dome. It is 55 meters high and considering the hill it becomes 70 meters higher than the ground around the hill. There are two simple and beautiful vaulted rows above the entrance which are among the first vaulted decorations of the Islamic art. According to the present inscription, this building was constructed by Qabus Ibn Woshmgir as his personal mausoleum in 397 AH.He was the governor of Gorgan at that time and was an artist, learned, and brave man. He promoted the art and science. He died in 402 AH. - five years after this dome was built.
